As I’m sure you’ve gathered by now, I visited Indianapolis for work last week. I didn’t get too much time to explore, but took a few hours on Saturday to walk around downtown.

The White River is a mirror of the city. It is the source of life for Indianapolis providing most of the water to support daily activities. Conceived by visual artist Mary Miss, commissioned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, with concurrent activities facilitated by EcoArts Connections and more than 20 leading arts science, environment, and municipal organizations and agencies, FLOW: Can You See the River? is a city-wide public art project that reveals how the ordinary activities of citizens affect the health and future of the White River water system.
The intention of FLOW is to engage the citizens of Indianapolis with the important and unique elements of the White River water system—its history, ecology, origins, and potential.
Using mirrors and markers throughout the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s campus and along a six-mile stretch of the river and canal, the project finds innovative ways to integrate visitors with the surrounding landscape, inspiring them to experience how water affects their everyday lives. A series of activities and accessible technologies allow people of all ages and backgrounds to explore and interact with their environment.
FLOW: Can You See the River? is a site-specific project commissioned for the IMA’s 100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park.
